Merrick was the tallest of the halfings he has ever known, but when it comes to other races 4'11 isn't something to be proud of. He likes to keep his hair short and spiked and while he doesn't mind facial hair, Merrick tends to keep himself clean shaven. A scar from his left eye to his nose and the "X" shaped scar on his back are the sign of a few people who have been "lucky" to make their mark on him. He took on the combination of his fathers emerald green eyes and his mother's dark red hair to give him an unforgettable face. His ears are slightly pointed giving him a bit of an elvish look.
Merrick outfits himself with a black leather jerkin, brown cloth pants and black leather boots. He also has one black leather shoulder mantle, a black belt 4 pouches ( which he keeps nearby at all times), and a black hood which he keeps down until nightfall. Merrick has many throwing weapons of all sorts (axes, knives, darts, shuriken etc...), two serrated daggers, one short sword, an array of boot knives, poison vials, smoke bombs, and poisonous gas vials. One of these pouches contains reagents and tools for alchemy.
Personality: Merrick is usually a go-with-the-flow sort of person, appearing very carefree. Merrick keeps this as a mask on for some of the deeper secrets he keeps to himself. Merrick is often tortured of many shameful memories of his betrayals of both family and friends. Merrick can be quite chatty once you have earned his loyalty, but otherwise he tends to keep to him self whenever possible. Genuinely caring for those he calls "friend," Merrick is willing to put his life on the line to keep his comrades alive. He is generally opened minded about many controversial subjects, with the exception of his own, without having exceptionally strong feelings about a particular subject. Simply put Merrick can be either one of two things, a great ally or a deadly foe.
Personal History:
Merrick was raised with his sister, his only family and sibling, in a small town called Blister in the outskirts of a dessert near a swamp. His mother died giving birth to his sister and his father was killed in one of attacks the town was under the constant barrage of by the swamp's inhabitants, the goblins. Due to the high injury rate, a constant need of medical attention was always in demand. Here, Merrick began to learn the ways of alchemy and herbalism. Thanks to the wide array of injuries and diseases that the "citizens" of Blister to procure, Merrick learned of many way to treat wounds and illnesses. In his "off time" Merrick would practice in the skill of throwing weapons in order to help with the goblin attacks so as to not put himself in too much danger. Even with Merrick's new found abilities, Blister could not sustain itself in the ever raging onslaught against the goblins. One fateful day the town was overrun in a bull rush attack from the Eastern side forced Merrick to flee to town. Merrick took his sister to a nearby cave he had discover one day while looking for herbs to hide away from the goblins. Merrick was sure that he and he sister would not survive. A human like figure emerged from the shadows of the cave promising great power in return for his soul. Merrick refused, but his sister agreed to sacrifice herself in order to save her brother. Merrick was then bestowed the powers over shadow, allowing him to twist it's very form to his will. With a heavy heart, Merrick accepted the powers and learned that in order to maintain them, he must sacrifice blood to the shadow-like figure. he was told that any blood would do, but the more powerful the person it came from, the less sacrifices he would have to make. Later, Merrick made his escape from the goblins at nightfall with his new found abilities, and now wonders from place to place in search of powerful entities...
Power Description:
* Affinity for Shadow: Merrick has the ability to mold and manipulate shadows into shapes and figures. ( Hands, Rope, another person). He also possesses the ability to "Meld" into the shadows, to avoid the searching eyes of enemies. When Melded, Merrick is still opened to being found by the other four senses ( Touch, Taste, Hear and Smell). The Shadows are rendered useless when light is cast upon them.
* Alchemical Student: Merrick has previous knowledge of the use of alchemy, allowing him to make solutions and mixtures for both offensive, defensive, and medical purposes. ( Healing potions, Poisons, Gases (with time and equipment), Oils, Greases, Pastes Smoke Bombs and utility potions. Each potion requires reagents found in the wild and purchasable in towns. Potions that are ingested have a toxic effect on the body and will poison (and possibly kill) those who ingest too much at once.
* Master of Throwing Projectiles: Due to Merrick's practice and combat style, Merrick is exceptional at welding and using almost all types of throwing weapons. Non lethal throwing weapons (Darts and Pins) can be coated in poison to affect his targets.
